CREWS Pacific SIDS – Strengthening Hydro-Meteorological and Early Warning Systems in the Pacific

The objectives of the project are to strengthen the ability of the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC Nadi) within the Fiji Meteorological Service to support other Pacific Islands; to enhance the capacity of the national hydrometeorological agencies of Pacific Island Countries and Territories to provide impact-based forecasts of extreme weather events (such as floods, droughts, cyclones and storms) and to enhance the effectiveness of Pacific Island and Regional Early Warning Systems for local and vulnerable populations.

 

Key Deliverables
  • Institutional Strengthening of FMS, RSMC Nadi and Pacific Islands’ NMHSs
  • Capacity building and implementation support of FMS, RSMC Nadi and Fiji DRM agency
  • Capacity building and implementation support for impact-based forecasts and warnings at country level
  • Modernization of forecasting capabilities of FMS/RSMC Nadi
  • Modernization of forecasting capabilities of Pacific Islands’ NMHS participating in the project including Samoa and Tonga
  • Improvement of meteorological and hydrological service delivery
  • Community-based early warning systems
  • Development of bills, legislations and socio-economic assessment for meteorology, hydrology and disaster management, as well as National Strategic Plans
  • Regional coordination mechanisms for improved services
  • Integrated ad inclusive operational Early Warning System  to address multi-hazards
  • Improved quality of accessible services provided to priority sectors and stakeholders to better respond to hazards
  • Early Warning communication and communities’ response to multi-risk information and warnings improved
  • Stronger inclusion of gender and persons living with disabilities in early warning systems
